Joint Entrance Examination Main (JEE - Main), formerly known as All India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE), will be conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) from 2019 onward, and it will be via online mode only. This Examination was being conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) until 2018.

JEE Main will be held in two sessions, the first session of the JEE Main 2020 exam will be conducted in the second week of January while the second session will be held in the second week of April 2020, tentatively. NTA will announce the JEE Main 2020 syllabus for both Paper 1 and Paper 2 in September 2019. The official schedule for the Engineering and Architecture examination will be available at nta.ac.in .

JEE Main is applicable for admission to NITs, IIITs and CFTIs participating though Central Seat Allocation Board. The candidate should have secured at least 75% marks in the 12th class examination, or be in the top 20 percentile in the 12th class examination conducted by the respective Boards. For SC/ST candidates, the qualifying marks would be 65% in the 12th class examination.

All the eligible candidates can appear for both the sessions of the JEE Main 2020. The authority will consider the best of two scores when declaring the ranking of the candidates. This exam is also the eligibility test for JEE advanced, which is the entrance exam for admissions to programs offered by the IITs in India. Only the top 2.45 lakhs score holders in JEE Main exam are eligible to apply for JEE Advanced Exam.

Eligibility Criteria

Candidates must be aware of the eligibility criteria as determined by NTA, to avoid any last-minute chaos. The eligibility criteria for JEE Main 2020 is as follows:

  • Age Limit : Students with date of birth on or after October 1, 1995 will be eligible. Candidates from reserved categories have been granted age limit relaxation as per Government of India norms.

  • Year of Passing Qualifying Examination : Students who passed their XII or equivalent exam in 2018, 2019 or appearing in 2020 are eligible for applying in JEE Main 2020.

  • Subjects in Qualifying Examination : Students with Physics and Mathematics along with either Chemistry or Biology or Biotechnology are eligible for Paper 1 of JEE Main 2020. For Paper 2, Mathematics is a mandatory subject with 50% aggregate in 5 subjects. Candidates must have 5 subjects in their qualifying paper.

  • Number of Attempts : Students can appear for the exam thrice, that too in consecutive years. Appearing for both the sessions in the same year will be counted as a single attempt.

  • Minimum Mark : It is compulsory to secure minimum 75% marks in class 12th examination or be in the 20 percentile in the 12th class examination organized by the respective Boards. This criterion is 65% for SC/ST category candidates.

Registration For JEE Main

The application form has to be filled online. The candidate has to make a username and password for login. Credentials like Name, DOB, email ID, mobile no, etc. have to be filled while applying the form.

  • Fill your academic details for class 10th & 12th (marks or appearing ).

  • Scanned copy of your photograph, signature and left thumb print has to be uploaded.

  • Choose a centre according to your preference.

  • Make the payment (Online or Offline through e-challan) according to your preference.

  • Check each and every details in your conformation page very carefully before conforming, and do keep a copy of this.

Admit Card for JEE Main

After completing the registration process, you can download your Admit Card

  • To download your Admit Card, you need to enter your application number and date of birth.

  • Check and ensure every details are correct on your Admit Card, If there is any error, immediately contact NTA.

  • It is mandatory to carry the Admit Card to the examination centre, without this you will not be allowed inside.

Syllabus for JEE Main

Before the formation of National Testing Agency (NTA) it was CBSE which was prescribing the syllabus for JEE Main. But afer the formation of NTA, only NTA will prescribe the syllabus for JEE Main. Previously NCERT syllabus was followed for this exam.

Mathematics :

Sets, Relations, and Functions, Complex Numbers and Quadratic Equations, Matrices and Determinants, Permutations and Combinations, Mathematical Induction, Binomial Theorem and its Simple Applications, Sequences and Series, Limits Continuity and Differentiability, Integral Calculus, Differential Equations, Coordinate Geometry, Three-dimensional Geometry, Vector Algebra, Statistics and Probability, Trigonometry, Mathematical Reasoning.

Physics :

Physics and Measurement, Kinematics, Laws of Motion, Work, Energy and Power, Rotational Motion, Gravitation, Properties of Solid and Liquids, Thermodynamics, Kinetic Theory of Gases, Oscillations and Waves, Electrostatics, Current Electricity, Magnetic Effects of Currents and Magnetism, Electromagnetic Induction, Alternating Currents, Electromagnetic Waves, Optics, Dual Nature of Matter and Radiation, Atoms and Nuclei, Electronic Devices, Communication Systems and Experimental Skills.

Chemistry :

JEE Main 2020 Exam Pattern

The pattern for JEE Main exam 2020 is given below:

  • Paper 1 for B.E. and B. Tech. (Computer based only).

  • Paper 2 for B. Arch. & B. Planning partly computer-based (mathematics and aptitude test) and partly pen-and-paper based (drawing test).

  • Type of questions : Multiple choice questions (MCQs) and numerical questions(Integer)

  • Duration of exam : 180 minutes

  • Total marks : 300

  • Marking scheme : For MCQs :- 4 marks will be awarded for a correct answer and 1 mark will be deducted for an incorrect answer. For answer with numeric value :- 4 marks will be awarded for every correct answer and 0 Mark will be deducted for every incorrect answer

  • Number of questions : 75 (25 questions from each subject i.e., Physics, Chemistry and Maths).

  • Types of questions : 20 MCQs with 1 correct option 5 Numerical questions with numerical value as answer.

  • Medium of paper : English or Hindi or Regional language (in some cases).

Paper 2 for B. Arch. & B. Planning

  • Type of questions : Multiple choice questions (MCQs) and numerical questions(Integer)

  • Duration of Exam : 180 minutes

Cut-off for JEE Main

Rank And Counselling

JEE Main rank list indicates you All India Ranks(AIR) and your respective category ranks of the candidates in India. However, the admission into NITs/ CFTIs/ SFIs will be granted based on All India Rank (AIR) only.

The successful candidates will be able to participate in the JEE Main 2020 counseling or seat allocation process. The counselling or seat allocation process will be different for concerned state governments and institutes. For admission to NITs/ CFTIs/SFIs/IITs etc., the admission will be granted via central seat allocation board counseling. The candidates have to get their documents verified at the time of counseling.
